Chimanimani District, Zimbabwe
The FLOW project offers an opportunity to highlight work TSURO is undertaking on conservation agriculture and integrated governance as well as to understand strengths and challenges of transitions towards agroecology.
Towards Sustainable Use of Resources Organisation (TSURO) Trust has been working with farmers and community leaders across Chimanimani district for nearly 25 years. As part of their work on transforming agricultural landscapes and livelihoods, TSURO Trust supports the transition to agroecology in an effort to combat desertification and promote climate adaptation.
For example, the Nature Plus (+) project is centred on the Bvumbura Core Zone which is a critical area near the Chimanimani Biosphere Reserve. The Nature Plus (+) project focuses on improving livelihoods through income diversification (e.g., apiculture) and gender-responsive solution building as well as supporting conservation agriculture (a method that has many overlapping practices with CMNF in Andhra Pradesh, India, such as crop cover for 365 days a year, minimum soil disturbance, and sowing diverse crops). In addition, the project also focuses on inclusive land governance structures in consultation with community. These governance practices ensure a focus on climate resilience and biodiversity while supporting a vibrant, prosperous community. Overall, TSURO seeks to reach nearly 5,000 individuals with the Nature Plus (+) project through working with 875 families across the zone.
The work of TSURO Trust has led to land regeneration, establishing nurseries, enriching soils, and supported sustainable water harvesting.
